Second of two shows at the Blue Note that day.
You may well have heard some of this show before – a Dixieland version of Resting Place with Bill Evans made the documentary on Bruce’s “Three Nights on the Town” DVD.
The Blue Note is a jazz club, and that shapes most of the setlist (but not all!).
I’ve always liked the extended opening to See the Same Way, and we get a two minute intro here – and a song where J.T. Thomas shines!
Bruce gives a lesson in, and demonstration of, two-handed independence as the phrase made it into several requests – before launching into King of the Hill and some twelve-tone Webern.
This was recorded two months after the release of Halcyon Days, and we get the title track and Halcyon Days from that record.
* There are a couple of imperfectness with this recording, which I belece occurred in the original recording – every one that I’ve found since has had the same stuttering during What the Hell Happened. Apologies – but I though the rest of the recording was to good not to share!
Your band for this evening was Bruce Hornsby, Bobby Read, Sonny Emory, Bill Evans, J.V. Collier, Doug Derryberry and J.T. Thomas.
