With the Range in 1988, opening for the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden.
This was four months after the release of Scenes from the Southside, and 16 months after Bruce and the Range first opened for the Grateful Dead. Here they’re opening at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, and this fine recording is taken from a radio broadcast at the time.
It’s certainly an appreciative audience: early in the show the crowd are huge for what they’re hearing, yet later on Bruce can be heard remarking that the Garden is only now filling up. The early-comers were certainly vocal!
Although he’d departed the Range by this show, David Mansfield drops in and out of the show.
When you catch the Bruce Hornsby documentary you’ll hear Bruce playing “Parisian Thoroughfare” at his senior recital – you’ll hear it here also moving into “The Way It Is”. That track actually starts off similarly to the record, which you’ll never hear today – look for George Marinelli’s guitar solo on that same song. (His vocals are up throughout the show also, which is a plus).
“The Road Not Taken” is always fun live, as is the transition to “Workin’ in a Coalmine”.
Enjoy this show from the Garden in 1988!
