A unique setting: with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, and Steve Kimock! This show was a week before Here Come the Noisemakers’ release, and features an orchestral take on several of Bruce’s songs, thanks to the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra.
Bruce laughs that they’ve taken the songs so far away from the original that they have to remember how the record went – there is no leeway for winging it with an orchestra of fifty plus people! It’s one of the very few times ever that the band play with a setlist… except for Bonny Bonaparte on drums, which makes for a funny moment before Night on the Town (a song Bonny learnt that day).
Filed under the “wish we’d had video” section, Bruce is apparently conducting Mozart at one point, to the crowd’s great amusement.
(Since uploading this recording we’ve identified the “unknown classical piece as Gustav Holst’s “Mars” from “The Planets” – since it’s mentioned in the recording!)
The full band is Bruce Hornsby, Bobby Read (saxophone), Bonny Bonaparte (drums), J.V. Collier (bass), Doug Derryberry (guitar), Steve Kimock (also guitar), J.T. Thomas (keyboards), David Wiley conducting and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra.
