Fun from the Casino in Hampton Beach, 1995.
One month after Hot House was released, Bruce Hornsby and his band came to Hampton Beach. It was less than two weeks after Jerry Garcia had passed, and you’ll hear a lot of the Dead throughout (“Gone but never forgotten”, Bruce says before Scarlet Begonias).
Valley Road sounds for all the world like it’s Walk in the Sun when it starts out (and we get some Coltrane in the middle!).
Talk of the Town includes Dark Star, where Bruce is sure to throw in a joke line about people not liking when he plays that.
Stranded on Easy Street begins with an unrehearsed rap, not for the last time.
Personal highlight for me was Bobby Read on End of the Innocence. He was just tremendous here. (I did enjoy his impression of a train to close out Mystery Train also!)
The band in Hampton Beach for this night was Bruce Hornsby, John D’earth, Bobby Read, Debbie Henry, John Molo, J.V. Collier and J.T. Thomas.
