Ever heard Au Privave into James Brown’s Sex Machine? You have now!
Firstly – the original taping of this concert included a stand-up comedy warm-up. For some reason, nobody removed it from the recording, so I’ve included it here too. I’ll say no more about it…!
This outing from Toledo in 1994 includes the first ever playing of Hot House Ball, a full year before Hot House was released. It’s also one of J.V. Collier’s first shows.
We’re treated to two from Charlie Parker: Au Privave and Billie’s Bounce in the middle of Jacob’s Ladder, punctuated by James Brown’s Sex Machine. Bruce jokes about throwing those in, along with Dark Star in Talk of the Town… “Great, everybody didn’t leave!”)
He also laments that his early gigs earnt him requests like The Way We Were, then plays a hilarious bitonal version of it during Across the River. (I’m sure he loves Barbara Streisand).
There’s a nice Molo solo and then a duo with John D’earth, both within Another Day.
You’ll also hear Marvin Gaye’s Don’t You Do It in the middle of Night on the Town and Lady With a Fan during Fields of Gray.
